Mrs. Jefferson

Mrs. Jefferson is a female Bald Eagle found in Maury County, Tennessee by some canoers in 2000. She was standing on a riverbank and not moving. The canoers captured her and transported her in the canoe with them. This is quite amazing as Bald Eagles can be very aggressive and it is not known how the canoers handled her, let alone got her to stay in a canoe and finish the trip.

She was examined and  seemed to be favoring her left wing and left leg. Nothing was broken, but there may have been some nerve damage. She also had an old eye injury, which impaired her vision and caused her to only fly in circles. The eye injury, coupled with an injury to the hallux (back toe) which had to be removed, rendered her non-releasable.

Today she is doing well at the American Eagle Foundation’s “Eagle Mountain Sanctuary” at Dollywood Entertainment Park in Pigeon Forge, TN. Mrs. Jefferson is surrounded by other non-releasable Bald Eagles, and we hope that one day she will find a mate and produce young which can then be released into the wild.
